2019 HEALTH AND WELLNESS TRENDS

The world of health and wellness is one that is continuously evolving and changing. It can be hard to keep up with the trends, but at Taylored Physiotherapy and Cryotherapy we have accumulated a list of our favourite recent trends to make it easier for you to stay updated and feeling great!

CRYOTHERAPY

By now you have probably seen or heard about cryotherapy. It is one of the greatest ways to kickstart your wellness routine. Cryotherapy improves individual’s wellness in everyday life through allowing for improved sleep, reduced fatigue, a strengthened immune system, boosted blood circulation and increased energy, metabolism and weight loss, burning up to 500 calories in one session due to the process of thermogenesis.
Cryotherapy allows for transformed skin providing a healthier and brighter appearance through reducing cellulite and decreasing the symptoms of skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, rosacea and acne due to the anti-inflammatory property’s cryotherapy provides. The extreme temperature causes the blood vessels to contract allowing for the skin to firm and tighten allowing a fresh and younger complexion, helping to improve and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles due to the result of regenerated cells. The use of cryotherapy provides further anti-aging properties by stimulating the body’s own natural collagen production which can be triggered by the cold temperatures at any age, providing elasticity, smoother, tighter and even skin tones whilst also strengthening hair, skin and nails. By specifically targeting inflammation and giving the body’s internal systems the best opportunity to combat that inflammation we believe Cryotherapy can provide incredible benefits to your health and wellness in such a vast range of situations.
Cryotherapy allows for an increase of fresh and nutrient rich blood into the body’s vessels allowing for an increase in natural cell regeneration. Through supported blood circulation, lymphatic drainage is improved and therefore this allows the breaking down and flushing of toxins and dead cells at an increased rate from the body. Essentially, cryotherapy leaves the body feeling reenergised and relaxed whilst looking and feeling healthier.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Just about everyone is talking about essential oils, and with good cause! Basically, essential oils are the distillation of plants and variety of other natural sources. Essential oils can be used for meditation, immune support, stress relief, healing skin irritations, improving mood, relieving symptoms of depression and anxiety, improving inflammation, and providing anti-bacterial properties.
The most popular ways that essential oils are used includes aromatherapy, digestion and application. Some of the most common essential oils include lavender, frankincense, lemon, orange and peppermint. Here at Taylored Physiotherapy and Cryotherapy our massage therapist and Pilates instructor Susan also knows just about everything there is when it comes to essential oils. Through working within Doterra Essential Oils Susan has built connections and knowledge that she would love to share with you. LIMITING REFINED SUGAR INTAKE

We are always told just how bad refined sugars can be for our health. Sugar can be linked to a variety of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, and tooth decay. Not to mention that sugar also causes your immune function to plummet, accelerates the process of aging, is linked to acne, can drain your energy and can be linked to depression and anxiety. With numerous recent studies displaying the detrimental side effects of refined sugars, we think it should be enough to motivate just about anyone to limit their refined sugar intake. But don’t forget that sugar is also proven to be highly addictive. At Taylored Physiotherapy and Cryotherapy we have a list of tips and tricks to help beat and overcome your sugar cravings:

  • A glass of warm water with lemon – the sour of the lemon counteracts the sweet cravings and works a treat
Swap it don’t stop it – Our bodies still do need some sugar! The natural sugars found in fresh fruits, dates, prunes, goji berries, honey and dairy products such as milk and cheese are still essential. They provide essential nutrients that keep the body healthy and work to prevent disease.
    Keep hydrated
    Avoid artificial sweeteners
Increase the protein intake within the diet
Ensure you are sleeping well and for the recommended 7-8 hours and avoid stressful situations.

USING LESS PLASTIC

With many supermarkets stopping the supply of single use plastic it is time (if you haven’t already) to go green! Not only is implementing a green lifestyle great for the environment, but it is great for you and your health. It isn’t any secret that plastic contains many toxins that aren’t so great for your health. Some tips to help you transition into a greener and low tox lifestyle include:

Investing in reusable non-plastic bags, straws and cutlery (that can be taken out and about)
Invest in a durable drink bottle and stop using single use plastic bottles
Ensure you are recycling where possible.

CHANGING UP YOUR EXCERCISE ROUTINE

Some of us hold misinformed opinions when it comes to exercise. It can be easy to fall under the impression we must be raising our heart rates to intense levels, and be doing lots of movement to be getting the best results when it comes to weight loss and goals. Simple and gentle forms of exercise such as yoga and Pilates are on a rise in 2019 with research suggesting that exercise doesn’t always have to be fast and intense to be effective. Pilates and yoga are a form of balance, flexibility and strength training which emphasises the role of posture, core and spinal strength, whilst utilising breathing techniques and mental awareness. One of the most unique things about Pilates and yoga is that they incorporate the mind, body connection within the practice. Providing mental awareness and emphasising the importance of breath whilst the body moves. Pilates and yoga are great forms of exercise to incorporate into your exercise routine as they help you to keep fit, toned and work to build strength. Proving that exercise doesn’t always have to be fast paced and intense to provide a great workout.

Here at Taylored Physiotherapy, we offer weekly pilate classes. The classes are run by Susan who is a core strength and rehab coach. The classes are small and personal, ensuring technique is correct and each minute is utilised. The classes consist of low-impact flexibility along with muscular strength and endurance movements. The schedules for classes are as follows:
Tuesday’s: 12:30pm – 1:30pm
Tuesday’s: 7pm-8pm
Friday’s: 12:30pm-1:30pm

Reformer pilates utilises the reformer machine and is generally more intense that matt based pilates as it provides resistance to each movement due to the springs which sit at the bottom of the reformer. Reformer pilates is highly effective in improving overall strength, flexibility, coordination and balance. Single reformer classes are available by appointment. To book an appointment please contact Susan on 0409 712 822 or 9659 4540.
